The hours and minutes hands are in white gold, while the calendar pointers are in blued steel. Victorinox provided this particular model to the Dutch Army until 1992. Notice the dial is very similar, although it’s interesting to note that the markers are pointed outward like the K-100s. My project watch above has them pointed inward, but that dial was also refinished so they probably put them back on backwards. Is the Bel Canto a ground-breaking middle finger to high watchmaking? Not really, it’s unlikely anyone that can splash out on a minute repeater will go for this instead. But that’s not the point. It means that collectors for whom the average chiming watch is a pipedream can actually get one on their wrist without re-mortgaging. It’s the first time I’ve been able to call a chiming watch affordable without sliding a ‘comparatively’ in there. That alone is worth a bit of hype. The fact that it’s one of the prettiest damn things Christopher Ward has ever built is the trill on top. Others from Rinspeed have been not quite so left-field, chiming more with societal shifts: the Presto was an extendable car, big when you needed it, compact otherwise, for that congested city life; the Rone was the first biofuel-powered super-car; the Bamboo ‘lifestyle vehicle’ had an inflatable, detachable roof; the Senso had a detection system that responded to driver mood. But take history into account, and you have the connoisseur’s dream. Check out brands like Nordgreen, Komono, Casio, Tsovet, Rossling Co, MVMT, and Vincero, just to name a few.
